As The Most Interesting Man in the World might say, “I don’t always listen to music when I write, but when I do listen to music.”
i.e. music without singing, no vocals, no distracting words. I’m trying to come up with my own words. I don’t need anyone else’s in my ear. Made Possible, by The Bad Plus, is an album I discovered last year and it’s been in my rotation since. I can’t pin down what I write when I listen to it, but that just proves its versatility. By moments, it is epic, intimate, loud, and gentle, and always it is these things without losing its own sound. Isn’t that what makes good writing, too: varied but distinct?
