Return to Reason

Three minutes of avant-garde cinema. French. Original title: Le retour à la raison

Short procession of odd but creative visual effects—both animated and live-action—that fails to amount to a whole; nevertheless, the effects are interesting. The best bit involves a spinning object lit so that its shadow becomes its double; then, as the two spin in unison, Ray imposes footage of the same object spinning even faster, creating a ghostly, eerie sense of time and motion. The last scene involves a nude woman cloaked in cinema.

Man Ray, 1923
