Brief early film of workers leaving the Lumière factory. French. Original title: La sortie des usines Lumière
The workers move in two directions: toward the camera and toward the left and right edges of the screen. The camera has a presence; the workers not only avoid walking into it, but they also “act” for it—either self-consciously, by forcing themselves not to look into its lens, or by playing it up for a future audience.
