A naughty boy pranks a gardener: steps on (and he may be his stepson) his water hose, waits until the confused gardener points the suddenly-dry hose at himself, then steps off and lets the water gush! After laughter, the angry gardener spanks the boy. French. Original title: L’arroseur arrosé
Fully-staged, acted short based on a simple gag. The first screen comedy? The beginning is flat. The hose lays down the horizontal line on which the action takes place. When the boy runs, he runs into the background; when he’s caught, the gardener brings him towards the camera before spanking him. For whatever reason, this Lumières short is the one that’s most over-intellectualized.
